Some of Guts' personality traits are stubbornness, he is a master swordsman, strong, fierce, over confident but also very vulnerable. Passionate, anti-social, caring for the people close to him. He has no special abilities or powers. He is purely human and achieved his immense strength through life long training.
Guts is 6'8" with a very strong, muscular and scarred frame. He has short black hair. He wields massive great swords from growing up within mercenary group who forced him to use oversize swords as a child. He has a scar on the bridge of his nose inflicted by his adopted father. He is missing a right eye, which is closed indefinitely. He is also missing his severed left forearm, which has been replaced by a prosthetic limb, fitted with an arm cannon. He has lost these things among many others, like fellow comrades in an event called the Eclipse during the end of The Golden Age Arc.
Guts was born in a pool of blood underneath his dead mothers hanging corpse. Not knowing his mother or father, he was picked up by a passing mercenary band, led by Gambino. Gambino became the adopted father of Guts along with his wife Shisu. Shisu died shortly after picking up Guts due to an infection. Gambino always blamed Guts for the death of his wife, calling him a cursed child and how he should have been the one to die. Gambino always disregarded Guts. Guts always tried to find a way to have Gambino appreciate him. Gambino trained Guts in the sword, always having him use over sized swords not meant for children. Gambino eventually sold out Guts to someone in the mercenary band, proceeding to be raped by him. This affected Guts, along with everything else, very deeply. Guts eventually had to kill Gambino, due to the fact that he came into his tent at night trying to kill him. So out of self defense, he killed him. The rest of the mercenary band chased Guts out of the camp, rendering him alone once again. Guts has never been able to live a normal life as a normal child. He never really experienced moments of happiness or joy as a child. His only true passion or desire was to fight, since thats all he was taught as a child eventually leading him to form a very close personal bond to his sword. He then meets a mercenary band called The Band of The Hawk led by Griffith, along with Casca, Judeau, Pippin, Crokus and Rickert. He is unwilling to join the Hawks at first, getting himself into a duel with Griffith. After losing the duel, Griffith forces Guts to join the Hawks. Guts has never had any comrades previously, so its hard for him to be accepted into this band of mercenary's because he is not used to it. Its hard for him to connect with people. Years go on and he forms a deep bond and friendship with these people. They feel like a family to him. Especially Griffith and Casca. Guts and Casca fall in love with each other. Guts sees Griffith as his closest friend. The Eclipse happens where Griffith sacrifices all of the band of hawk and brands them with the mark of sacrifice to obtain infinite power and to be reborn as the fifth member of the Godhand. Guts loses his right eye along with his left forearm. He also loses everyone he has ever cared for, everyone he has ever loved.
